Dr. John Opata Mate-Kole is a Board-certified Pediatrician and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is a graduate of the University of Ghana Medical School. Dr Mate-Kole pursued his Pediatric Specialty training at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University at the Harlem Hospital Center in New York. He was an Attending Pediatrician at the Stamford Hospital in Connecticut from 1991- 2003 and later became the Medical Director of the Goldstein Children’s Health Center at the same hospital. He returned to Ghana in July 2003 and worked as a Specialist Pediatrician at the Ridge Hospital in Accra, Ghana. Dr Mate-Kole was instrumental in setting up the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Ridge, now the Greater Accra Regional Hospital and getting the Pediatrics department certified for postgraduate training. He is a pioneer fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and as secretary of the Pediatric Faculty delivered the inaugural Department of Pediatrics report. He returned to the US in 2015 and joined the US Federal Government as an Attending Pediatrician with the United States Army at Fort Benning, Georgia, providing medical education and training to Military staff Physicians, Active duty Family Medicine residents, Nurse practitioners, Physician Assistants and Medical students. The Nyakoa Clinic in Asylum Down, Accra was established in memory of his late mother, Grace Akua Nyakoa Mate-Kole (nee Quashie). The goal of Nyakoa is to provide good quality affordable health care to everyone irrespective of their socio-economic backgrounds. Dr Mate-Kole’s area of interest is Pediatric Asthma. He is a strong advocate of School-Based Health Centers (SBHC) and believes this program will help improve educational outcomes for children in Ghana, by keeping kids healthy to help them focus better on their studies and taking the burden off their parents, helping the parents to be more productive at work.
